Good preparation is the key to success.

  • Work on answers to the most common interview questions like “tell me about yourself”, “what are your strengths and weaknesses”, “talk me through your CV” or “where do you see yourself in five years’ time”.
  • Know your CV:  Dates of employment, chronology, industries, duties and reasons for leaving.
  • Do research on the company. Look at the website or speak to competitors in the industry. Prepare a few questions based on the information you have found.
  • Familiarise yourself with the position and job specification prior to the interview, identifying your experiences that demonstrate the skills or knowledge gained.
  • Prepare your interview outfit: Make sure that you are well groomed and appropriately dressed. Ask your Recruitment Consultant’s advice with regards to dress code. Over dressing for an interview can be as detrimental as under dressing.
  • Ensure you have directions, travelling times and transport options before the day of the interview.
  • Take a copy of your CV, supporting academic documents and recent pay slips. Keep this in a neat folder.
  • Do not put anything on the table during the interview, with the exception of the folder containing your CV and supporting documents
  • Switch your cell phone off for the duration of the interview. Do NOT put it on vibrate.
  • Pay attention to your body language. Make sure that you sit comfortably. If you tend to fidget, fold your hands in your lap or loosely in front of you on the table. Eye contact is important.
  • Do not, at any point, take your CV from the Interviewer, or attempt to check details on the CV during the course of the interview.
  • Give detailed, but relevant answers.
  • Keep answers factual. Steer clear of emotional responses.
  • Only offer personal information if it is requested.
  • Don’t be afraid to pause and think.
  • Try to relax and enjoy the interview. Remember that company culture fit is often as important as ability and experience. Be polite and friendly but remain professional.
  • Do not raise the topics of salary, benefits or leave. The Interviewer will do so if he/ she deem it necessary.
  • Provide the company or your Recruitment consultant with detailed feedback after the interview.
